News & Advisories

Advisories and updates will be posted here for events or construction projects taking place in the South Boston Waterfront that may impact transportation, traffic, parking, and area activity.

  • The MBTA has announced a schedule of extended subway closures in a concerted effort to end all slow zones currently in place. These closures will allow the T to complete all track work, including spot repairs, tie replacements, rail replacement, and ballast replacement. These closures will occur periodically through December 2024 and affect all lines. Check to see if your train is running and view suggested alternatives.

Note: The Silver Line is not affected by this work.

  • The City of Boston has begun preliminary work on the Summer Street Bus/Truck Lane Pilot Project. It will begin with a series of short-term changes that will be made permanent if found to be successful. Corridor improvements will include:

    • New pilot bus/truck lanes to provide better passenger amenities while improving bus service reliability, particularly for the MBTA 4 & 7 buses. Trucks will be permitted to use the bus lane to accommodate heavy truck traffic from Massport.

    • Protected bike facilities for low-stress and safe connections between South Boston and Downtown Boston. New connections will be made between existing infrastructure.

    • Improved pedestrian experience with the addition of transit/bike infrastructure, improving traffic management.

Work crews have begun installing signal equipment and pavement markings. Striping work will be done overnight and is expected to have a minimal impact on traffic, transit, and bikes on Summer Street. There will be some parking restrictions on Summer Street to allow crews to perform their work safely. Signal equipment work will be done during the daytime and, similar to striping work, is not expected to have a significant impact on transportation on Summer Street. Signage, striping, and signal work will likely take several weeks.

Please visit the Summer Street Bus/Truck Lane Pilot Project website for more information.

  • Massport, in partnership with MassDOT and the City of Boston, is moving forward with the reconstruction of Cypher Street and E Street, with the long-term goal of creating truck lanes on Cypher Street that will help keep truck traffic off residential streets and improve safety for all roadway users. The scope of work includes full-depth pavement widening, structural pavement overlay, new sidewalks and curbing, new street lighting, new traffic signal systems, pedestrian crosswalks and accessibility ramps, a new grade separated cycle track, landscaping, soil remediation, and new pavement markings and signage in accordance with current state and federal standards.

To expedite the project and maintain a safe work zone, Cypher Street will be fully closed starting September 5 and will remain closed until June 2024. Detours will be established with electronic message boards advising motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. A project overview and maps of the detour routes are attached. More information can also be found on the Cypher Street Project website.

  • Fire Alarm Testing – ongoing device testing underway, with horns and strobes initiated periodically on Monday – Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. through April 26.

    Construction Update – April 19

  • Construction began during the summer of 2021 on a new station entrance/headhouse to Courthouse Silver Line station. This new headhouse includes a new stair, elevator, and escalator on Seaport Boulevard in front of District Hall. The site perimeter will require pedestrian and bicycle detours into a portion of Seaport Boulevard. Construction is anticipated to be complete in 2024 and result in a new accessible entrance to the Silver Line in the heart of the Seaport neighborhood.
